CHAPTER 1: Donut Feed the Squirrels Live Read Aloud

To celebrate the launch of her early chapter graphic novel Donut Feed the Squirrels, Mika Song will be reading a chapter a day Kamishibai style using her original watercolor pages and sharing the process behind each drawing in the story. Young comics enthusiasts should bring their comics-making questions to the live event. Recommended for ages 5 and up.
Kamishibai is a storytelling form used by traveling storytellers in Japan which is a wooden stage used to hold the pictures while the reader tells and acts the story.

Mika Song is a children’s author/illustrator who makes stories about sweetly funny outsiders.
Fresh into picture books after working in animation for several years, she received the Portfolio Award from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Since then she’s had the opportunity to illustrate her own books as well as other authors’. A Friend for Henry by Jenn Bailey and illustrated by Song received the Schneider Family Honor from the American Library Association in 2020.
She is excited for her upcoming graphic novel, a young chapter for emerging readers called “Donut Feed the Squirrels” coming out in September 2020 with Random House Graphic. She holds a regular comic class for young people in her Queens neighborhood.
Before children’s books, Mika studied animation at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and worked as an animator on children’s educational movies for several years. She grew up in Manila, Philippines and Honolulu, Hawaii.
