Inside the Kaleidoscope: Turning Poems into a Novel (ages 14+)
March 27, 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 3:45 pm EDT
I will read a sneak preview of CALL ME ATHENA, a YA novel-in-verse, and discuss my inspiration for the story. We’ll compare and contrast the “lyric sequence” and the “verse narrative.” I’ll share a few sequence poems as examples and then we’ll write our own. Bring paper and a pencil.
Colby Cedar Smith is a poet and a novelist who grew up in the Midwest and still dreams of the cold northern woods and the smell of lake water. She holds an EdM in Arts in Education from Harvard University and loves to visit classrooms as a teaching artist – often weaving music, visual art, and nature exploration into her creative writing workshops. Her poetry has been a finalist for the The Iowa Review Poetry Award, the New Letters Poetry Prize, the Colorado Prize for Poetry; and a semi-finalist for the 92Y “Discovery” Boston Review Poetry Prize. Her poems have been published in Bellevue Literary Review, Harper Palate, Mid-American Review, Pleiades, Potomac Review, Saranac Review, and The Iowa Review. In 2020, she received a Fellowship from the NJ Council on the Arts. She lives in Hopewell, New Jersey and teaches creative writing at the Arts Council of Princeton.
